U of G Showcases Technology Leadership During Premier's Visit

U of G president Charlotte Yates, Premier Doug Ford, Minister Jill Dunlop visited members of the BDDC team.

Last week, the University of Guelph hosted Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Ontario Minister of Colleges and Universities Jill Dunlop to show them how the University is helping to develop commercial solutions to address challenges in sectors across Ontario’s economy through technology research and innovation.

The premier and minister received a demonstration of GIGAS, a cutting-edge robot in development by a multidisciplinary team at the University of Guelph. This "smart" robot aims to automate tasks within Ontario's greenhouse sector and is being trained to oversee the growth of greenhouse vegetables, identify disease outbreaks, perform leaf pruning and handle produce harvesting.

The pair also toured the Bioproducts Discovery and Development Centre (BDDC) where researchers showcased how they transform agricultural waste products into biomaterial pellets, a practice that contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting a circular economy.
