New Microsoft Teams Features!

Posted on Monday, September 28th, 2020

Microsoft has released some great new features for Teams, now available to all U of G users! The most exciting additions are:

  • Meetings now automatically pop out into a separate window, allowing you to navigate other Teams documents and chats while keeping the meeting window at full size.
  • The maximum number of videos on display has increased from 9 to 49, or a 7x7 grid. This “Large Gallery” view will appear when there are 10 or more attendees sharing video. To switch to Large Gallery mode, go to “More options” (…) in the meeting controls  and select “Large Gallery.”
  • Meeting controls are now out of the way at the top of your meeting screen (and you no longer have to jiggle your mouse to see them).
  • The introduction of Together Mode, for those who are missing the classroom experience. It is available when five or more people are sharing video.

Please note these are only available in the desktop version of Teams (not the web app).

Enabling these new features is a breeze!

  1. Open Teams and click your profile picture in the top right corner of the screen.

  2. Select Settings > General from the dropdown menu.

  3. Select “Turn on new meeting experience”

  4. Restart Teams:

    1. Right-click/Command-click the Teams icon in the taskbar (bottom of your computer screen).

    2. Select “Quit.”

    3. Relaunch Teams as normal.
