Publishing an Organizational Website

This service is in the process of being decommissioned and new organizational websites can no longer be created. If you are a faculty member or a member of a lab/research group, please see Faculty, Lab and Research Websites (CampusPress) for more information on our new service. For further advice on how to proceed with your website project, please contact CCS.WebSolutions@uoguelph.ca

If you already have an organizational website and need to retrieve existing content or files, please see the instructions on Publishing an Organizational Website

Note:  This resource provides information for managing your organizational website space. These instructions assume that you understand the principles of creating a website and terms such as Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) and Secure Shell (SSH).

Note: Your website’s "Home" page file must be named index.html or index.shtml; otherwise, the site will not display.

You can use these technologies:

  • HTML, SHTML, Javascript, or CSS
  • ColdFusion 7.0
  • Microsoft Access
  • Microsoft SQL Server

Organizational websites have two file storage areas:

  • Staging (that is, the site that is being used to test new features), and
  • Production (that is, the site that is available to everyone).

There are three technologies for managing your website:

  1. Using a SFTP Client
  2. Using Dreamweaver
  3. Using a Secure Shell Client

Note:  If you are connecting from off campus, you must first connect to the campus network using the VPN Service; otherwise, you cannot establish an SFTP connection to upload information.

Using a  SFTP Client

Note:  You can use any SFTP client to access the server.

To connect to the server:

  1. Open your SFTP client
  2. In the Host field, enter files.web.uoguelph.ca
    1. In the Protocol list, select SFTP - SSH File Transfer Protocol using (SSH2)
    2. In the Logon Type: select Normal
    3. In the User field, enter the organization’s Central Login ID.
    4. In the Password field, enter the organization’s Central Login password.
    5. Connect.

After the connection is established, most SFTP clients will display the contents of two directories: the Local Site located on your local computer, and the Remote Site located on the University server.

Change the path information on the Remote Site to either the staging area (/stage/foldername) or the production area (/production/foldername).

    Using Dreamweaver

Note:  You must use Dreamweaver version 8 or later; earlier versions do not have SFTP capabilities.

    1. Go to File / Site / New Site
    2. Select on the Advanced tab
    3. Click on Remote Info
    4. Enter the following information - replace foldername with your folder name
    Access FTP
    FTP Host   files.web.uoguelph.ca
    Host Directory production server: /production/foldername
      stage/development server: /stage/foldername
    Login Organizational account login ID
    Password     Organizational account password
    Use Secure FTP (SFTP)    checked

    Using a Secure Shell Client

    1. Start a Secure Shell (SSH) session by using a SSH client such as Putty.
    2. Log in with the following:
    Access FTP
    FTP Host   files.web.uoguelph.ca
    Host Directory production server: /production/foldername
      stage/development server: /stage/foldername
    Login Organizational account login ID
    Password     Organizational account password
    Use Secure FTP (SFTP)    checked

After the connection is established, the program will display the contents of your organization's home directory.

To change to the appropriate directory enter one of these commands:

    • cd /stage/foldername (for the staging area), or
    • cd /production/foldername (for the production area).
