Position Description:

The Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics at the University of Guelph invites applications from tenured faculty for the position of Director, School of Hospitality, Food and Tourism Management (Open to University of Guelph Internal Candidates Only).

The Director is responsible for the effective, efficient, and collegial operation of the School of Hospitality, Food and Tourism Management. Ideal candidates will be dynamic, thoughtful leaders with an earned doctorate in Hospitality, Tourism, or a related field. An established record of success in teaching, research and service in one or more areas of interest to the School is required. Candidates should be committed to enhancing the success of the School and its programs by working effectively with, and being highly visible and accessible to, key stakeholders, including faculty, staff and students, and also with alumni, employers, and granting agencies. The ideal candidate should also have some experience in external relations, human resource management, planning and budgeting. Changes within the higher education environment suggest that the individual should also be an effective advocate for the social sciences, but also entrepreneurial and adaptive, willing to consider new approaches and revenue-generating opportunities. Specifically, the goals for the next five years will include (but not limited to):Collaborating with the Dean's Office, the EDI Coordinator and Lang's EDI Committee to advance EDI initiatives within Lang; Collaborating with the Dean's Office and supporting Indigenous Initiatives; Working to increase undergraduate enrolment (in HTM and potentially other new programs); Working to increase the number of international students; Developing new revenue generating programs (Course Based Masters in Supply Chain Management, Post-graduate Undergraduate Certificates and Micro-credentials); and Ensuring an exceptional student experience.

The School of Hospitality, Food and Tourism Management (HFTM) was established in 1969 as the School of Hotel and Food Administration and offered the first BComm major at the University of Guelph. HFTM has since grown to become the pre-eminent School of its kind in Canada, offering unique undergraduate, graduate and professional development programs to develop leaders in hospitality and tourism management. HFTM graduates are frequently recognized through prestigious awards such as the Ontario Hostelry Institute's top 30 under 30 program. HFTM faculty have been similarly recognized for their excellence and innovation as educators and scholars and for their service to the hospitality industry. HFTM has an active industry advisory board and large participation by students in co-op learning opportunities and applied projects, which further contribute to HFTM’s well-established links with the hospitality industry. The Hospitality School is also an integral part of the Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics at the University of Guelph. The Lang School delivers one of the largest undergraduate business programs in Ontario with over 4,000 students currently enrolled, and offers a wide range of specialized programs in business and economics across undergraduate, graduate and professional education.

The HFTM faculty currently includes nine (9) established full-time positions, along with a number of sessional instructors. The School includes a fully functioning restaurant, which was acknowledged as one of the top sustainable restaurants in Canada, through which students have the opportunity to learn about restaurant management first-hand. HFTM also houses the Longo’s Food Retail Laboratory and the Schneider’s Food Research Laboratory, which provide controlled environments for studying consumer retail choices and consumer perceptions of food. It also houses the Anita Stewart Memorial Food Laboratory where University of Guelph nutrition and hospitality students learn about food preparation, safety and culture. It also acts as an event space and broadcast student for researchers to share their knowledge of food across the globe.
