Professor Barrett was a high-school drop-out and teenage rebel who with dedicated personal initiative got himself to university where he became so enthralled with higher learning that he went on to get a Ph.D. His journey was only made possible through bursaries and scholarships. In 1971 he joined the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, University of Guelph where he taught until his retirement in 2003. His enthusiastic teaching, research and writing along with his rich voice will forever be remembered by his former students, colleagues, friends---and of course his family. Apply by May 15 to the CSAHS Awards Committee at csahs.awards@uoguelph.ca with a letter describing contributions made to create and foster equitable and inclusive interactions and spaces at the University of Guelph and/or the broader community. Selection will be based on demonstrated initiative and leadership to promote advocacy for equity, diversity, and inclusion in the community through positions held (volunteer, extracurricular, or employment. Volunteer opportunities can be conducted online). This includes creating learning and working environments that are safe, positive, respectful, diverse, and inclusive; recognizing and celebrating the range of equity-seeking (equity-deserving) groups that comprise the community. It may speak directly to lived experience as a member of equity-seeking group(s), experience as an ally or advocate, or both.

Students registered in any program offered by the College of Social and Applied Human Sciences who have participated in activities that promote advocacy for equity, diversity, and inclusion. Preference will be given to students majoring in Sociology and Anthropology.
