This award honors true grit: a DVM student whose passion for equine medicine reflects an unwavering spirit, resilience, compassion and dedication to the horse, and is presented to a student with a strong orientation to serving horses and the people who rely on them, particularly within a rural setting where commitment and resourcefulness matter most. Apply in the competition for DVM convocation awards with a reference letter (max 1 page) from their practicum host detailing the student’s practicum experience and confirming that the host practice services one or more rural communities. The letter should describe how this experience has supported the students’ learning objectives and contributed to their understanding of equine practice in rural communities, including the student’s dedication to the wellbeing of horses and adaptability when faced with a challenge in patient care delivery during their practicum. Selection will be based on the most significant demonstration that the practicum supported their learning objectives and contributed to their understanding of equine practice in a rural community, demonstrating dedication to the wellbeing of horses, and adaptability when faced with a challenge in the delivery of patient care during their practicum. In the case of equally qualified candidates, selection will be based on the highest DVM program average.

Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or protected persons of Canada who have completed Phase 4 of the DVM program in the Equine Stream (VETM*4920) and who have completed a practicum in a rural community veterinary practice in Ontario. A rural community is defined as having a population of less than 25,000.
