Established in 2026 in memory of Coconut, the New Leash on Life Angel Coconut Memorial Prize recognizes a graduating student who has demonstrated compassion and commitment through voluntary veterinary service. The award honours students who provide essential care to animals in need, particularly where financial barriers exist, and whose efforts reflect empathy, service, and advocacy for animal welfare and the human–animal bond. Apply during the call for OVC convocation awards with a letter (max 1 page) detailing the student’s volunteer and/or work experience, including number of hours, with community access-to-care initiatives, beyond required coursework, including the Stu Lang Community Healthcare Partnership Program (CHPP) if applicable. Selection will be based on the most demonstrated experience with community access-to-care initiatives beyond required coursework.
Students who have successfully completed Phase 4 of the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program, who have completed Phase 3 VETM*4530 Health Management III: Shelter and Community Medicine module, and who have volunteer and/or work experience in community access-to-care initiatives beyond required coursework. Preference will be given to students who have shown volunteer engagement with community access-to-care initiatives and/or Kim and Stu Lang Community Healthcare Partnership Program (CHPP) throughout all four years while in the DVM program, beyond required coursework.
