Launched in 2012, this $200 million scholarship fund awards up to 100 undergraduate scholarships each year at top Canadian universities. Founded by philanthropist Seymour Schulich, it supports exceptional students who demonstrate strong leadership and a passion for STEM, helping them become the next generation of global innovators. Schulich Leader Scholarships are Canada’s most prestigious undergraduate STEM awards, and every Canadian high school may nominate one graduating student annually. Schulich Leader Nominees must submit a completed Entrance Financial Need Assessment Form (E.N.A.F.) to University of Guelph Student Financial Services by February 18. High school nominates Schulich Leader by January 28, Schulich Leader nominees must submit their Schulich Leaders Scholarship application by February 18. Selection will be based on: 1) Nominee is entrepreneurial-minded, exhibiting leadership, charisma and creativity. 2) Strong consideration shall be given to the Nominee’s demonstrated financial need. 3) Nominee demonstrates an intent to pursue a career in one or more of the following focus areas: (A) technology; (B) engineering; (C) entrepreneurship and business enterprise; and (D) applied scientific research, constituting research into questions posed by scientific theories and hypotheses with potential commercial or other practical applications, but specifically excluding medical research or purely theoretical research. To receive all payments recipients must remain registered full-time in an eligible program. If a Schulich Leader registered in an Engineering Program transfers to a Non-Engineering STEM Program, the University may reduce the amount payable to such Schulich Leader after the date of such transfer accordingly (e.g. from $30,000 per year to $25,000 per year, based on the current amount allocated to each program). Students are allocated funds each year directly to their personal bank accounts. This money is deposited by July 31 each year provided the student meets renewal requirements. Recipients will have full discretion on how this money is spent but they are responsible for paying their own student accounts (tuition, fees, housing, meal plan, bookstore charges, fines etc.). Recipients must sign the Schulich Leader Scholarship Code of Conduct. If requested by a Schulich Leader, the University may grant a one-time deferral of such Schulich Leader’s annual scholarship for up to one academic year, or for such longer period based on medical or compassionate grounds. If any Schulich Leader earns all the credits required to complete the degree requirements for their Engineering Program or Non-Engineering STEM Program (as applicable) in fewer than four years, such Schulich Leader will be entitled to receive the remaining portion of their four-year scholarship as a lump sum upon completion of such requirements If a Schulich Leader: (A) is no longer registered in an eligible Engineering Program or an eligible Non-Engineering STEM Program at the University; (B) fails to meet the University’s requirements to pass an academic year and such failure has not been excused by the University pursuant to a formal appeal made by the Schulich Leader; or (C) is suspended or expelled by the University in compliance with the terms of its applicable code of student conduct, then the University shall discontinue any further payments to such Schulich Leader.
Canadian Citizens entering an eligible STEM program who have been nominated by their high school or CEGEP will be considered for this scholarship. Students must be dynamic, entrepreneurial minded and demonstrate academic excellence, leadership, creativity and charisma. Strong consideration will be given to students with financial need.
