This session will provide early career researchers with tips from which to start to build a successful research program. Speakers will address the need to: i) identify and understand expectations, ii) clarify your research needs, iii) set realistic goals, iv) develop a plan for achieving goals, and v) identify and manage individual barriers to achieving goals and more.

Successful grant recipients will present general strategies for writing research grant applications, including identifying and addressing the relevant "audience", minimizing risks, framing the application, balancing detailed and general information, presentation style, the importance of peer review and more. This is an opportunity to have general grant writing questions discussed.

In this session, faculty will share their best practices and strategies for recruiting student and postdoctoral trainees and building and maintaining productive team relationships with their students and postdoctoral fellows. We invite attendees to come learn about and share challenges and tips in forming and managing teams of research trainees.

Nov 25, 2019 - Intellectual Property Essentials

• Alexis Black, IP Advisor, Canadian Intellectual Property Office
• David Hobson, Manager Technology Transfer, Research Innovation Office

Alexis Black, Business Development Officer with CIPO, will provide an overview of the patent process by defining intellectual property (IP), review types of patents and other IP protection, and she will discuss what to do when a researcher suspects new IP (inventions) have been created. This conversational seminar will address why researchers should care about patents, and describe the costs, timelines and benefits associated with patenting.

David Hobson manages intellectual property developed at the University of Guelph and he will provide context and guidance on the options available to researchers to protect their research and how the Research Innovation Office manages research-based IP to magnify the commercial impact of new inventions in the industrial market.

Feb 7, 2020 - Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Grant Applications

This session will focus on the consideration of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) to enhance research excellence. It will address EDI in research teams and research methodology, design and questions; the changes required to enhance EDI in research and innovation; and the strategies and tools that the Tri-Agency is employing to address persistent barriers embedded in research cultures and systems.

At the end of this session, even though there is no magic solution, participants will leave with practical suggestions for addressing EDI in grant applications and implementing EDI within their research programs. This session will be broadly applicable to the natural sciences and engineering disciplines.

Part two of this session will provide strategies for communicating impact outcomes in fresh new ways.
