This conversational seminar will address why researchers should care about patents, and describe the costs, timelines and benefits associated with patenting.

David Hobson manages intellectual property developed at the University of Guelph and he will provide context and guidance on the options available to researchers to protect their research and how the Research Innovation Office manages research-based IP to magnify the commercial impact of new inventions in the industrial market.

It will address EDI in research teams and research methodology, design and questions; the changes required to enhance EDI in research and innovation; and the strategies and tools that the Tri-Agency is employing to address persistent barriers embedded in research cultures and systems.

At the end of this session, even though there is no magic solution, participants will leave with practical suggestions for addressing EDI in grant applications and implementing EDI within their research programs. This session will be broadly applicable to the natural sciences and engineering disciplines.
