Are you moving out? Not sure what to do with your unwanted items? Here are some considerate ways that you can get rid of them.

1. Sell or give away your item if it's in good condition.

There are many online tools for rehoming items including Facebook Marketplace and Kijiji. You could also consider offering larger items to the new tenants moving in to the place you will be leaving. Make sure you ask, don't just leave items behind.

2. Donate your item if it's in good condition.

Browse this list of Guelph locations accepting donations. Donated items should be in reasonable condition. Please be advised that you cannot donate used mattresses.

Community Groups Accepting Furniture Donations

  • Habitat for Humanity Restore. Accepts gently used furniture, appliances, and many other items. View the full list on their website. Provide affordable housing opportunities to individuals and families in need of a safe, decent and affordable place to call home, and help the environment by recycling perfectly reusable household items and providing them with a second home, reducing your environmental footprint!
  • Mission Thrift Store. Accepts large and small furniture. No beds.
  • Value Village Thrift Store. Accepts large and small furniture.
  • St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store. Acceptable furniture items must be in good condition with no stains, rips or damage. Some furniture exclusions may exist. Please contact the store.
  • Onward Willow Community Centre. Accepts large and small furniture.

3. Dispose of your item.

Many small items can be disposed in your regular waste collection bins but they need to be sorted property. If you're unsure of which bin to place an item in, you can refer to the City of Guelph's Waste Wizard and Sorting Guide.

Off-Campus Bulky Item Collection

In Guelph, the proper way to dispose of bulky items (furniture, appliances, etc.) is by booking a large item pickup. Call the City of Guelph to purchase your ticket by credit card and schedule your large item pickup. Then place the item at the curb before 6:30 a.m. on the scheduled pickup day. Purchase a ticket

  • Large item: $60+HST for one item and $27+HST for each additional item. Tickets are non-refundable.
  • Refrigerant/CGC pumping for refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers, air conditioners, water coolers is an additional $22.12+HST each.
