CBS Alumni-Student Mentorship Program

Do you want to:

  • Get connected with alumni and upper-year students who share your career interests for informal yet professional career discussions?
  • Exchange ideas and receive personalized career guidance?
  • Establish long-lasting professional relationships?

Consider applying for the CBS Mentorship program!

Eligibility

  • Currently enrolled in a CBS major
  • Upper-year undergraduate student (third-year or higher)
  • Priority will be given to students from equity-deserving groups

How it Works

  1. Apply: Complete the survey during the application window.
  2. Get matched: If your application is selected, you will be placed in a mentorship group that includes one CBS alumni mentor, and 1-3 upper-year CBS students (including yourself).
  3. Connect:We'll e-introduce you to your mentorship group members, so you can hit the ground running and schedule your first meeting.
  4. Learn:You'll meet with your mentorship group at least four times throughout the academic year, providing plenty of opportunity to learn from each other, ask questions, and build meaningful relationships.

CBS students can log in to the Biological Science Career Skills CourseLink resource for more information and to access the application form.

The application form collects information about your University of Guelph experiences, mentorship objectives, career interests, and availability. Estimated completion time: 10 minutes.

Please note that while we strive to match as many eligible individuals interested in the program as we can, demand for the program has exceeded the available slots in the past. Please provide complete responses to each question.

CoBump – College of Biological Science Undergraduate Mentorship Program

The College of Biological Science Undergraduate Mentorship Program (CoBUMP) is a graduate student-led initiative in which upper-year undergraduate students interested in pursuing biological research are paired with graduate student mentors. This program began as iBUMP in the Department of Integrative Biology at the University of Guelph in the spring of 2017. After three years of success and over 150 undergraduate students paired with graduate mentors, we have expanded to the rest of CBS, offering this mentorship program to students in Molecular and Cellular Biology and Human Health Sciences as well.

The benefits of this program are twofold: the undergraduate students benefit from one-on-one mentorship from a current graduate student regarding the scientific research process, graduate school applications, and graduate student life; the graduate students benefit from gaining valuable mentoring skills that may be difficult to gain otherwise. It also provides everyone involved with opportunities to interact with other members of the CBS community, strengthening ties between the departments and fostering a sense of connectedness.

If you have any questions or comments regarding this program, please do not to hesitate to contact the CoBUMP Committee at CoBUMP@uoguelph.ca.

CBSSC Peer Mentorship Program

Run by the College of Biological Science Student Council, the Peer Mentorship Program connects first-year CBS students with upper-year students to help them network with each other, transition to university, and build leadership skills.

As a mentee, you'll gain access to resources, supports, and a mentor, who will help you become a prepared and successful CBS student. You'll also be invited to exclusive events throughout the year (with free food and swag!).

More information about the Peer Mentorship Program will be shared with students in the fall.
