Grant Ferguson, professor of hydrogeology at the University of Saskatchewan and adjunct at the University of Arizona and University of Waterloo, studies deep and fossil groundwater systems and sustainable water use. He is vice president, North America, for the International Association of Hydrogeologists and an associate editor for Groundwater.

In his lecture, Living Fossils: Ancient Groundwaters in the Anthropocene, Ferguson explains that fossil groundwater, recharged over 12,000 years ago, can be a sustainable resource if managed carefully, despite common concerns about depletion or climate impacts.
