Provincial Summer Research Programs

The ORA and OBW provincial programs offer summer research programs during which students engage in research supervised by a professor at one of the participating host universities in that country.  Students may be able to receive University of Guelph credit for these programs if they find a University of Guelph professor to supervise and mark them for an independent research course (speak to a Program Counsellor for more information).  Students may also be able to use the research program as a Co-op work term if approved by Co-op & Career Services.

Students should only submit ONE Summer Research Program Application.

The ORA Program offers research opportunities for students in Science, Engineering and Health Sciences through the ORA Summer Research Program. Detailed information is available on the ORA  Summer Research Program website.

Students do not need to speak French for this program if they find a mentoring professor who is willing to supervise their research in English. Students must be nominated by a University of Guelph professor for this program and must find a professor at a participating Rhône Alpes university to supervise their research. (Contact CIP if you are unsure where to start when looking for a supervising professor.)

The ORA Summer Research Program Application will be completed online and a copy will be emailed to the Centre for International Programs, goabroad@uoguelph.ca

OUI programs previously offered scholarships for participants, however, these scholarships are no longer available. Please refer to the Student Financial Services Travel Bursaries and Scholarships information for financial assistance.

The OBW Program offers research opportunities for students in Science, Engineering and Health Sciences through the OBW Summer Research Program. Detailed information is available on the OBW Summer Research Program website.

Students DO NOT HAVE TO SPEAK GERMAN for this program. Students must be nominated by a University of Guelph professor for this program and must find a professor at a participating Baden-Wurttemberg university to supervise their research. (Contact CIP if you are unsure where to start when looking for a supervising professor.)

The OBW Summer Research Application form will be completed online and a copy will be emailed to the Centre for International Programs, goabroad@uoguelph.ca

Summer Research Programs

Students may apply to do research under the supervision of a University of Bremen or University of Hohenheim professor during any semester(s).  Students in any field of study offered at the two universities are eligible to apply.

The majority of these placements happen during the Summer semester. However, for placements in Fall or Winter, please e-mail the Centre for International Programs to inquire about deadlines.

UBremen

  • Scholarship: approximately $1200/month for three months + $1200 for airfare (offered by UBremen to a few U of G students)
  • Supervisor: students must try to identify a faculty supervisor, however, if they are unable to find one, the international office at UBremen may be able to help direct students to the appropriate faculty
  • See the fields of study offered at the University of Bremen.

Apply to the University of Bremen Research Program.

UHohenheim

Apply to the University of Hohenheim Research Program.

Guelph students can apply to participate in a Liverpool professor's research project during the Summer semester.  Projects are available in:

  • Architecture
  • Engineering
  • Environmental Science
  • Computer Science
  • History, Languages & Cultures
  • Law & Social Sciences
  • Life Sciences
  • Psychology

Applicants must have a 73% cumulative average.  Here is a list of the research projects students can apply to work on.

How to Apply:

Submit U of G's online study abroad application by the deadline and choose Liverpool - Summer Research Projects as your first choice.  The Centre for International Programs will then decide which students to nominate to ULiverpool, and these students will need to submit ULiverpool's Summer Research Project application and specify which project they wish to work on.

Other details:  Research placements of 4, 8 or 12 weeks are available.  Students will be registered in a research course at ULiverpool and receive a grade. Guelph students may receive 0.5 U of G credits for the research course if approved by their Program Counsellor (must pay U of G summer tuition for 0.5 credits), or can choose not to earn U of G credit for the research placement.  Students may live in the ULiverpool residences during their research placement.

Mitacs offers a number of research internship opportunities in a variety of countries through their Globalink Program.

If you have arranged to complete research for your degree outside of Canada, separate from the programs CIP offers, you will need to register with the Centre for International Programs. This means two things: you must complete the DepartSmart pre-departure orientation on CourseLink (which you need to be registered into by our office), and purchase Guard.Me Travel Insurance. You can find more information about DepartSmart and who to contact in the CIP office here.

Application Instructions

Depending on the type of research placement you are applying to the type of application you complete will differ. Check out the application instructions for more details.
