Italy Field School: Voices of Sirens: Women, Art, Geography, and the Making of Naples

Coast in the Almafi region of Italy - this field school is GSO travel grant eligible

The course examined concepts of the “feminine” in the geographic and artistic history of the region of Naples through studying the history of the natural and human geographies of the region through the major women artists of the region; poets (Vittoria Colonna), painters (Artemisia Gentileschi and others), philosophers (Tullia d’Aragona) and film-makers (Elvira Notari).  Students studied how the history of the region is bound up in legends and myths that originate in female metaphor and the bodies of women, and how the seascape, island-scape, landscape and volcanic terrain have shaped the natural and artistic environments. The course looked at major women artists who were influenced by the hazards and beauty of the Neapolitan landscape while exploring the geographical history of the region.
