First Year Biology

First Year Biology Courses

Core to the BSc. degree are three introductory biology courses offered by the College of Biological Science. These courses include:

  • Discovering Biodiversity BIOL 1070
  • Biological Concepts of Health BIOL 1080
  • Introduction to Molecular and Cellular Biology BIOL 1090

These courses are unique their design as they not only focus on the foundational concepts related to each discipline but they also incorporate skills workshops to help the student transition to university. A key design to these courses is an intentional interdisciplinary project that integrates all three of the disciplines. Students participate in a group project with other students from the other two courses to tackle a real world problem. Students will work together to address the challenges of a scenario and bring together ideas and concepts from each course to develop solutions that integrate concepts across all three disciplines.

Past topics have included:

  • Sustainable Agriculture
  • Global Obesity
  • Chrono-biology - artificial light
  • Malaria
  • Influenza
  • Water as a biological resource

These courses will be the foundation for which most biological science courses, offered by the College of Biological Sciences, will build from.
