On August 7th, two University of Guelph chemists were honoured for their research excellence at the third annual ECS Guelph Young Researcher Symposium. The event brought together graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, faculty and research staff to share their work in electrochemistry, materials science and surface science.

It was hosted by the Electrochemical Society (ECS) University of Guelph Student Chapter and the Electrochemical Technology Centre (ETC). The event featured several keynote lectures and five-minute flash presentations, providing young researchers a platform to share their work and learn from others.

"The symposium offers young researchers a unique opportunity to share their work and engage with experts in electrochemical science and technology – an interdisciplinary field critical to addressing today's most pressing challenges," says Dr. Stacey Scott Interim Dean for Computational, Mathematical, and Physical Sciences, “It highlights both the outstanding research of our rising stars and the vibrant, collaborative community fostered by ETC leadership that continues to advance training and research at the University of Guelph."

Doctoral student Negar Sabouhanian and Postdoctoral Fellow Jingwen Zhou were awarded the inaugural Jacek Lipkowski Award. The award recognizes exceptional early-career researchers in the fields of electrochemistry, materials science and surface science. The award is in honour of University of Guelph professor emeritus Dr. Jacek Lipkowski, a leader in fundamental electrochemistry. Lipkowski was also one of the keynote speakers at the event.

Both recipients presented lectures on their research. Sabouhanian, a member of the Aicheng Chen Research Group, presented her work on Electrochemical Reduction of Carbon Dioxide on Bismuth-based Catalysts. Zhou, a post-doc in Prof. Leanne Chen’s lab, presented her research on Theoretical Investigation of High-Performance Catalysts for Hydrogen Storage in Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers.

Congratulations, Negar and Jingwen!
