CCMPS grad students shine at inaugural CCMPS 3MT College Heat
Graduate students from the College of Computational, Mathematical, and Physical Sciences (CCMPS) took the stage on April 7 for the College’s first-ever Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) competition, held in Peter Clark Hall.
3MT® is an annual competition that challenges students to present their research and its impact in just three minutes using a single slide.
20 master’s and PhD students from chemistry, computer science, mathematics and statistics, and physics, each delivered engaging presentations that showcased the depth and diversity of research across the College. This year’s top presenters impressed judges with both the quality of their research and their ability to connect with the audience:
-
1st place ($500): Scott Sammons (PhD, Chemistry, advisor: Dr. Derek O’Flaherty)
The First Replicator: Xenogenetics in an RNA World - 2nd place ($250): Mahek Patel (MSc, Computer Science, advisor: Dr. Stacey Scott)
Turning Chaos into Comprehension: AI-Powered Chat Summary of K-pop Livestream Chat for Global K-pop Fans - 3rd place ($150): Matthew Kreitzer (PhD, Applied Mathematics, advisors: Drs. Rajesh Pereira and Daniel Ashlock)
A Clever Way to Paint the Ground
The event was emceed by Jean Hein, Outreach Manager, with remarks from Dr. Stacey Scott, Dean, and Dr. Ayesha Ali, (Acting) Associate Dean Research and Graduate Studies. Sammons and Patel will go on to represent CCMPS at the University of Guelph 3MT® Final on April 30. Congratulations to the winners and thank you to all participants.
