Education and Employment Background

Dr. Sheng Yang received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from McGill University in 2019. From 2019 to 2020, Yang held a position as a Postdoctoral Fellow at McGill University. Yang joined the School of Engineering at the University of Guelph in 2020 where he is now an Assistant Professor.

Research Themes

Yang’s research focuses on advancing the fundamental technologies of additive manufacturing and generative design with the help of Internet of Things, big data analytics, and bio-inspired design. Yang runs the Design Innovation and Intelligent Manufacturing (DIIM) lab, and seeks to tackle critical challenges in aerospace, green energy, and healthcare. He and his research group conduct research into energy efficiency, complex system optimization, and personalization. Key areas of focus include:

  1. Computational design for additive manufacturing. Yang and his team develop computational tools to support bio-inspired functional design with complexity of geometry, material, and functions.
  2. Data-driven mass customization. Yang develops data-driven methods and pipelines to support mass customization of personalized healthcare products.
  3. Digital twin-based complex system optimization. Yang develops digital twins for complex systems to support more accurate simulations, predictive quality, energy efficiency, and lifecycle decision making.
  4. Novel additive manufacturing processes and materials. Yang seeks to develop novel AM platforms and materials with tunable properties to support functional applications, such as flexible electronics and soft robotics.
