Departmental Seminar - Prof. Neil Rees
Date and Time
Location
MACN 101
Details
Prof. Neil Rees from the School of Chemical Engineering at the University of Birmingham (UK) will give a seminar entitled “Investigating methods for platinum group metal thrifting” on May 29 at 10 AM in the Link Room (MACN 101).
Prof. Neil Rees's research interests range from fundamental electrochemistry and technique development to electrocatalysis and organic electrochemistry: basically anything you can stick an electrode in and get a signal out.
Abstract: The platinum group metals (PGMs) are listed as critical metals, due to their importance to the future economy and potential supply risks. The anticipated growth in demand for PGMs is projected to outstrip supply soon, and so various strategies are needed to: (i) use less, (ii) recycle more, and (iii) replace PGMs with alternatives where possible. The talk will cover some of our recent work in some of these areas: using less metal by fabricating and testing smaller nanocatalysts, exploring the simplification of electrochemical recycling/recovery PGMs, and potentially replacing Pt catalysts by other materials.
There will be coffee and Timbits at 9:45 AM.
