This event promises to provide attendees a day filled with professional development opportunities to learn, gain confidence, and acquire new skills to RISE through their engineering careers. Abstract: Recently, text-to-image generation models have gained tremendous popularity due to their capabilities to produce accurate, diverse and even creative images from text prompts. However, text prompts are highly ambiguous in terms of conveying visual control. For example, if we want to generate an image with "my own backpack" or generate an image with "my backyard" as the background. These control signals cannot be well represented as text. Therefore, we need diverse types of control signals to complement the text-to-image generation process.

Water activity is all about energy.  It is a thermodynamic principle that can provide valuable information on the stability of a food product; from microbial spoilage, lipid oxidation, and caking and clumping to shelf life and packaging determination. But water activity also has uses beyond food. Please join us in discovering why and how to measure water activity, discuss specific food applications, and then go beyond the world of food to investigate novel applications like hydrate formation, building materials, and metal-organic frameworks.

Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is already part of our lives. It’s built into the operating systems in our phones, it’s the algorithms that define our social media and search feeds, and it detects fraudulent withdrawals from our bank accounts. But the possibilities of rapid technological expansion are causing many discussions.

It’s June and we are celebrating Pride Month at U of G. The Queer University of Guelph Faculty and Staff Network (QUofG Network) went into hiatus during the pandemic, but we want to bring everyone together and revitalize the group. A deep understanding of the fundamental operation of our world ought to enable us to do good and make our live better – this is what attracted me to scientific studies and discovery. In this talk I will illustrate how deep scientific understanding can lead to impact by examples of work done in my lab in the areas of nanomaterials, surface chemistry and diagnostic devices. I founded the Impact Centre to enable the movement of scientific discovery to societal impact, and I mentored over 140 science-based startups over 10 years, some of which are now quite successful.
