On February 6, 2025, Adam Riddell, a PhD candidate in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Guelph, presented at the Canadian Organic Invitational Virtual Seminar (CORGI-Virtual Seminar).

The CORGI-Virtual Seminar is a community-building effort hosted by the Chemical Institute of Canada (CIC). Speakers are invited to present their research to a national audience of organic chemistry researchers from industry, academia, and alternative career paths.

On Tuesday, February 11th, 2025, the Department of Chemistry hosted a Global Women's Breakfast. Members of the department gathered to celebrate the accomplishments of our female staff with relaxed, informal discussions and coffee and pastries.

Michael Lapolla successfully defended his thesis on: Biophysical Modulation and Chemical Synergies in Microbial Reponses to Microwave Fields and Oxidative Stress.

Karley Zimmer successfully defended her thesis entitled: Site-Specific FRET Detection of Fluorescent Small Molecule Targets Using DNA Aptamers

Eric Nicol successfully defended his PhD entitled: Computational Investigation of Cope-Type Eliminations of Beta-Borylated Sulfoxides and Amine Oxides.

Nolan Frame successfully defended his PhD entitled: Polysaccharide Targets for the Study of Enteric Bacteria, Enterocloster, Alistipes, and Hungatella in Human Health and Disease.

Tony Shi successfully defended his thesis entitled: Carbonate-Assisted Electrochemical Oxidation of Methane on Bimetallic Copper Cerium Oxides.

At the International Symposium on Electrochemistry and Surface Science (ISESS) in Honour of Jacek Lipkowski's 80th Birthday, held from August 14th to August 17th at the University of Guelph, six U of G CEPS students won notable awards. 

Student Oral Presentation Winners:

• Stephen Tatarchuk, graduate student in the Department of Chemistry, won 1st place in Section 1 for a presentation on Insight into Catalyst Activity for the Electrooxidation of Ammonia from Linear Scaling Relations and Microkinetic Modeling.

The 75th Annual Meeting of the International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE) was held at the Palais des Congrès located in downtown Montréal, Canada from August 18th to August 23th this year. Two University of Guelph graduate students in the Department of Chemistry won poster awards.
