Why Should We Compost?

When food waste is sent to landfill, the waste is compressed over time. During this process, food waste is unable to decompose because it lacks access to oxygen. Instead, it produces methane gas, which contributes to global warming.

When we compost, organic materials are diverted from landfills. This process no only sequesters carbon from the atmosphere, but also allows valuable nutrients to return to the soil. This organic material is no longer considered "waste", it's now a useful resource. 

The University of Guelph currently has multiple composting streams working in tandem. The compost we collect on campus is used in flowerbeds and at our campus student farm, the Guelph Centre for Urban Organic Farming.
