CCMPS Honours Outstanding Faculty and Staff with 2026 Awards
The University of Guelph’s College of Computational, Mathematical, and Physical Sciences (CCMPS) recognizes outstanding faculty and staff with its 2026 Faculty and Staff Awards.
The awards will be presented annually to celebrate excellence in teaching, research, supervision and service across the college.
“These award recipients represent the very best of our college,” says Dr. Stacey Scott, dean of CCMPS. “Their work supports student success, advances research and strengthens our community in lasting ways.”
With the creation of CCMPS, it is especially meaningful to recognize the people who are helping shape our community, Scotts adds.
“These award recipients are not only advancing teaching, research and service, they are defining what it means to be part of CCMPS. Our award recipients are building a strong, connected college community.”
Faculty Awards
Assistant Professor Research Excellence Award: Dr. Derek O’Flaherty
This award recognizes an assistant professor demonstrating strong research productivity and future potential. Dr. O’Flaherty’s work advances understanding in his field while also providing meaningful training opportunities for students, positioning his research program for continued growth and influence in chemistry.
Excellence in Graduate Supervision Award: Dr. Paul Garrett
Dr. Garrett is recognized for his long-standing commitment to graduate student mentorship. He is known for creating a supportive research environment and guiding graduate students toward success in a variety of career paths.
Excellence in Teaching Award: Dr. Denis Nikitenko
This award recognizes excellence in undergraduate teaching. Dr. Nikitenko delivers innovative, hands-on learning experiences and creates structured, supportive and engaging classroom environments both challenge and inspire students.
Excellence in Undergraduate Research Supervision Award: Dr. John Dutcher
This award recognizes outstanding undergraduate research supervision. Dr. Dutcher has mentored a large number of undergraduate researchers and supported their development through meaningful research experiences and opportunities. His student-centered approach has supported career success across academia, industry and beyond.
Staff Awards
Academic Staff Teaching Excellence Award: Dr. Kate Stuttaford
This award recognizes sustained excellence in teaching among academic staff. Dr. Stuttaford is known for creating engaging, student-focused learning environments during her two decades at U of G. Beyond the classroom, her work in curriculum development, laboratory instruction and student mentorship has had a lasting impact on teaching and learning across CCMPS.
Staff Excellence Award: Jacqui DeFreitas
This award recognizes exceptional contributions by non-academic staff. Jacqui DeFreitas is recognized for outstanding service and impact across the CCMPS community. Through professionalism, dedication and commitment to service, she has enhanced operations and contributed to a positive, collaborative college environment.
