The University of Guelph is looking for community members to join the Research Ethics Board (REB)!

What are REBs?

REBs are committees that review all research involving human participants according to the Tri-Council Policy Statement on Ethics in Human Research. The University of Guelph REBs consist of faculty representatives, graduate student representatives, individuals with legal, medical, and ethical expertise, and community members.

Qualifications

We are looking for members of the community who do not have current direct ties with the University. Retirees or alumni who did not undertake research involving humans during their time at the University also qualify. We need regular board members and alternate board members – these roles differ in the level of commitment. You do not need any special qualifications, but you do need to be able to do the following:

  • Attend meetings on either the first or third Wednesday of each month from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM
  • Meeting preparation time is estimated to be 2 to 3 hours
  • You may also be asked to undertake 3 to 5 reviews per month requiring 30-60 minutes each
  • You should be comfortable using email and reading documents online

Benefits

Being an REB comes with multiple benefits, including:

  • You will contribute to advancing research and improving life for all Canadians
  • You will be providing a valuable service to the University and your community
  • You will be part of an interesting group and meet interesting people
  • You will discuss current research projects being undertaken by leading University researchers
