Drilling on a Dreary Day

Two groundwater monitoring wells were installed adjacent to a stream and agricultural land in Parkhill, Ontario using rotosonic drilling. These wells are used for water quality sampling to monitor the concentrations of nutrients (phosphorus and nitrate). Agricultural activities have been recognized as the leading source of diffuse phosphorus entering freshwater systems. Monitoring both groundwater and surface water at this location allows us to get a better understanding of nutrient transport and groundwater-surface water interactions. This will contribute to understanding and advancing processes for best management practices in agricultural land-use settings in attempt to limit the transport of phosphorus and nitrate via groundwater flow and maintain or improve the water quality in receiving surface water bodies.
