Last of a Handful

Endangered within Canada, Jefferson Salamander (Ambystoma jeffersonianum) can be found in select southern Ontario forests. Threatened predominantly by habitat fragmentation, degradation, and destruction, data suggest that Ontario Jefferson populations have declined by greater than 90% over the past 30 years. Research in the Norris Lab uses a combination of mark-recapture and radio telemetry methods to address key questions related to Jefferson survival, juvenile dispersal, and overwintering habitat use. Increasing our understanding about Jefferson population demographics and habitat use is crucial for developing effective conservation and management actions.
