How should the REB/Ethics Office respond to requests from external researchers to conduct research at the University of Guelph?

In order to determine how to proceed with a particular external research team request, we would ask them to submit a copy of the documents which received clearance at their TCPS2 compliant institution, along with a copy of their clearance certificate. These documents would be reviewed by the Director, Research Ethics with two possible outcomes:

  1. If the research team is requesting access to University of Guelph faculty, staff, or students and/or using the resources of the University of Guelph as outlined in the Interpretation (see below), then the research team must obtain a local PI and submit an application to the University of Guelph REB.
  2. If the research team is NOT requesting access to University of Guelph faculty, staff, or students and/or using the resources of the University of Guelph as outlined in the Interpretation, but is, for example, simply using the publicly available contact information to contact U of G faculty, staff, or students, then the documents will receive administrative ethics review by the Director, Research Ethics AND will be sent to the AVPR for institutional review.

If an external researcher must apply to the University of Guelph REB a local Principal Investigator (PI) must be the person to submit on their behalf.

If the project has already been approved at another TCPS2 compliant Canadian institution, the local University of Guelph PI must submit:

  • The University of Guelph REB Application form, Sections A, B, C, D, N, and O. Fill out Sections L and M ONLY IF data is being stored at the University of Guelph.
  • All the documents used to obtain approval from the other institution. Include the certificate obtained from that institution.
