My research is sponsored. Do I need to tell participants?

Yes. The sponsor must be listed on the consent form given to the participant.

According to TCPS 2 (2014) Article 2.1(a) 3.2,  “Researchers shall provide to prospective participants, or authorized third parties, full disclosure of all information necessary for making an informed decision to participate in a research project.” Further, the Application (b) states that “information generally required for informed consent includes…a statement of the research purpose in plain language, the identity of the researcher, the identity of the funder or sponsor, the expected duration and nature of participation, a description of research procedures, and an explanation of the responsibilities of the participant”.

The REB is open to consideration of exceptions put forward by researchers.

Wording for Consent Forms

The consent must specify the name of the sponsor, e.g., “Funding for this research has been provided by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.” Please ensure you state the full name of the sponsor.
