Blueprints for Prosperity: Examining Rural Strategies for Mega-Manufacturing Investments

Lead Applicant: Ryan Gibson

Research Priority: Strong Rural Communities

Program Type: Tier 1

Funding Cycle: 2025/2026

Research Centre: NA

Research Summary: How can rural communities prepare for and economically benefit from strategic investments in manufacturing? These projects involve spending money to build or expand factories, creating jobs, improving roads, and attracting businesses. However, they can also increase housing costs, strain services, and harm the environment if not planned well. Researchers are studying past manufacturing investments in Canada and other countries to help rural communities prepare. By examining successes and challenges, they aim to find the best strategies for Ontario towns. The goal is to create recommendations that maximize benefits and minimize risks. A strong plan will ensure small towns grow in ways that support their people, economy, and environment.
