Case-based peer learning to support Ontario dairy producers and improve dairy cattle welfare

Lead Applicant: David Kelton

Research Priority: Animal Health & Welfare Projects

Program Type: Knowledge Translation and Transfer- Mobilization

Funding Cycle: 2021/2022

Research Centre: NA

Research Summary: Lameness and injuries (hock, knee, neck) are animal-based indicators of dairy cattle welfare, and their prevalence is a direct reflection of the care the animals receive. Dairy producers are benchmarked by the Canadian industry and mandated to improve if any of these measures exceed acceptable levels; the industry expectation is continuous improvement, but there is no guidance on addressing or improving these measures. This project will develop and provide producers with evidence-based resources, showcase success stories and highlight current research on how to prevent and treat lameness and injuries.
