Cover crops for improved soil management and soil health in the Holland Marsh

Lead Applicant: Mary Ruth McDonald

Research Priority: Soil Health

Program Type: Tier 1

Funding Cycle: 2021/2022

Research Centre: NA

Research Summary: The high organic matter soils of the Holland Marsh are well suited for the production of onions, carrots and other high value vegetables; but are also prone to wind erosion and the build-up of plant pathogens due to intensive production. This study will investigate if specific cover crops can contribute to soil health and reduce soilborne plant pathogens. It will also evaluate commercial 'soil health' kits to generate results that will aid growers in determining the health of this highly valuable soil.
