Examination of Refinement of On-Farm Euthanasia in Nursery Pigs: Impacts on Welfare and Producer Experience

Lead Applicant: Terri O'Sullivan

Research Priority: Animal Health & Welfare

Program Type: Tier 1

Funding Cycle: 2026/2027

Research Centre: Ontario Swine Research Centre

Research Summary: Euthanasia is sometimes necessary when a pig’s welfare is compromised and recovery is not possible. However, the process can be emotionally challenging for those responsible for carrying it out, and concerns remain about the effectiveness of some methods, particularly for pigs weighing between 8 and 20 kilograms. This project will evaluate refinements to an existing euthanasia method to improve outcomes for both animal welfare and stockpersons. Interviews with on-farm personnel will also examine how euthanasia decisions are made and identify challenges associated with current practices. The findings will support practical improvements to current practices, will help inform future training, and support both animal welfare and human well-being in Ontario's swine sector.
