Glyphosate alternatives for sustainable weed control
Lead Applicant: François Tardif
Research Priority: Plant Health and Protection
Program Type: Tier 1
Funding Cycle: 2025/2026
Research Centre: Ontario Crops Research Centre - Elora, Woodstock
Research Summary: Researchers are studying the impact of reducing or phasing out glyphosate use on corn, soybean, and winter wheat farms in Ontario. The project is testing alternative weed control methods—such as different herbicides and mechanical techniques—to see how they affect weed populations, crop health, yield, and farm profitability. It also includes a focus on managing volunteer winter wheat and identifying the most effective glyphosate substitutes for soybeans. The goal is to find weed management solutions that are effective, affordable, and environmentally sustainable. The results will provide practical guidance for farmers, crop advisors, and policymakers.
