Manipulation of the gut microbiome for control of necrotic enteritis in chickens

Lead Applicant: Shayan Sharif

Research Priority: Animal Health & Welfare

Program Type: Tier 1

Funding Cycle: 2021/2022

Research Centre: Ponsonby General Animal Facility

Research Summary: Necrotic enteritis (NE) is an infectious disease that severely impacts the broiler industry, and while usually treated with antimicrobials, imminent restrictions on antimicrobial use mean an alternative treatment is needed. This study will investigate the efficacy of using probiotics to control NE in Canadian flocks by identifying microbes in the small intestine of healthy chickens that are associated with protection against NE. The study will support the development of a potential probiotic formulation for use in broilers to protect them against NE and enhance their overall gut health.
