Research Summary: Existing technologies for preserving processed foods today rely on non-compostable petroleum-based polymers to extend shelf life, but the limited shelf life of packed foods such as meat and crispy food items contributes to Ontario’s 3.5 million tonnes of annual food waste. The goal of this research is to develop cost-competitive ultra-high barrier compostable polymer packaging that will extend the shelf-life of packaged foods. It will support Canada’s plan to achieve zero plastic waste by 2030, which is largely focusing on eliminating waste from single-use plastics.
