Research Summary: Plastic tubing and ground coverings are used in Ontario greenhouses to ensure viable growth and weed control without the need for harmful chemicals but can be a significant source of plastic pollution. This project aims to utilize bioplastics, agri-food fillers, and biocarbon to develop biodegradable plastic tubing and sheeting that will meet the mechanical performances, thermal stability, and puncture resistance properties required by industry. This will benefit the Ontario agri-food sector by substituting petroleum-based plastics, supporting waste diversion, and adding value to the agricultural residues, enhancing efficiency and sustainability.
