Monitoring and Modulating Inflammation in Dairy Cows Around Calving

Lead Applicant: Stephen LeBlanc

Program Type: Tier 1

Funding Cycle: 2026/2027

Research Centre: Ontario Dairy Research Centre

Research Summary: All dairy cows experience inflammation around calving, but in some animals the response becomes excessive, reducing health and productivity. It is not well understood why and when this excessive inflammation begins in otherwise healthy cows. This randomized controlled trial at the Ontario Dairy Research Centre will investigate whether inflammation during dry-off (when milking stops before calving), contributes to inflammation at calving. Researchers will monitor inflammatory markers throughout this understudied period and evaluate whether anti-inflammatory treatment at dry-off can reduce inflammation then and at calving. Findings will help guide management practices and interventions to prevent excessive systemic inflammation and improve dairy cow health.
