Exploring nutritional and non-antimicrobial methods to improve male dairy calf success through transportation

Lead Applicant: David Renaud

Research Priority: Animal Health & Welfare

Program Type: Tier 1

Funding Cycle: 2021/2022

Research Centre: NA

Research Summary: This project aims to better prepare male dairy calves for the challenges of transport in order to reduce levels of morbidity, and mortality and improve calf welfare. The project will evaluate the effectiveness of NSAIDs (anti-inflammatory drug) or nutritional intervention in improving pain management and reducing inflammation and discomfort in male dairy calves. These interventions, if effective, could provide a non-antimicrobial preventative method for calves prior to transport.
