Turning insight into action: Roadmap to implement agri-food pathogen preparedness

Lead Applicant: Zvonimir Poljak

Funding Cycle: 2025

Research Summary: The Managing Agri-Food Pathogens report outlines five recommendations to strengthen Canada’s capacity to respond to emerging biological threats – from zoonotic diseases to antimicrobial resistance. While the report establishes what needs to happen, this project will take the next steps to confirm alignment among industry, government, and researchers on those priorities. It will then build a roadmap that defines how to implement the recommendations through a coordinated, sector-driven approach. The roadmap will outline near- and long-term steps, assign roles and responsibilities, and foster collaboration. It will identify key enablers such as data infrastructure, science communication, and cross-sector governance. By engaging diverse stakeholders, the roadmap will serve as a practical guide for turning evidence into action. It will help ensure the research and insights generated through the Food-from-Thought program are translated into meaningful outcomes—strengthening Canada’s preparedness, enhancing food safety, and protecting public and animal health in the face of biological threats.
