Research Summary: In Ontario’s dairy goat sector, extended lactations are emerging as a promising management strategy. However, the implications for productivity, animal health and welfare remain poorly understood. This project will generate the evidence needed to guide adoption of this management practice by examining how extended lactations impact production, udder health and general animal health, and how to best implement this practice on farm. Assessing the health impacts and economic trade-offs of extended lactations (compared to annual kidding) will deliver a clear cost–benefit analysis for producers. Results will be directly communicated to Ontario dairy goat farmers and Ontario small ruminant veterinarians, providing practical, science-based tools to enhance productivity, strengthen animal health and welfare, and support the long-term sustainability of the sector.
