Lead Applicant: Amar Mohanty

Research Priority: Innovative Products & Product Improvement Projects

Program Type: Tier 1

Funding Cycle: 2022/2023

Research Centre:  Ontario Crops Research Station - Simcoe

Research Summary: Camelina (Camelina sativa) is an emerging oil seed crop in Ontario. It is gaining attention for its potential as a biobased alternative to petroleum oil that has potential to be used in industrial applications such as additives, coatings, adhesives and other resins. This project aims to (i) explore winter camelina's performance in a dual cropping system with soybeans (where both are planted in the same parcel of land in the same year) in the Ontario climate (ii) to use camelina oil to develop novel bio-based plasticizers and flame-retardant additives and (iii) to use machine learning algorithms to analyse the best conditions and outcomes for those compounds.
