Ethics and Regulatory Compliance

Animals

The use of live animals in research, teaching, and testing is monitored and regulated on provincial and national levels. An Animal Utilization Protocol must be approved by the University of Guelph Animal Care Committee prior to commencement of any animal based work.

Biohazards

Rules and regulations related to biological topics such as biosafety, biosecurity, and biotechnology.

Human Participants

If your research involves human participants at any point, a human participant protocol must be approved by one of the two Research Ethics Boards (REB).

Radiation

Radiation Safety programs educate staff, faculty and students on managing contact with radiation. This can mean anything from laser light, to X-ray, to emissions from specialty microwave heaters, to subatomic particles from radioactive materials.

The University's radiation protection program is administered by Environmental Health & Safety (EHS).

For more information, please refer to the EHS website.

Other

Additional rules and regulations that may apply to your research, such as:

  • Alcohol
  • Controlled drug, narcotics, and veterinary biologics
  • Controlled goods and controlled technology
  • Environmental assessments and approvals
  • Nanotechnology
  • Research risks and due diligence
  • U.S. Public Health Service Financial Conflict of Interest Requirements
