Application Process

Students must apply for the M.Binf, M.Sc., or Ph.D. programs through the Office of Graduate Studies at the University of Guelph.

All applicants should include a statement of intent that is part of the OUAC application. This is your chance to show the Admissions Committee your innovativeness and passion for bioinformatics. It should be structured as a short essay of approximately 500 words.

For Master of Bioinformatics applicants include:

  • How your academic and other experiences make you a suitable candidate for the Master of Bioinformatics program

  • How the Bioinformatics graduate program will help you to achieve your career goals

  • Why you believe this particular graduate program at the University of Guelph is ideal.

For M.Sc. and Ph.D. applicants include:

  • The Bioinformatics research you intend to conduct during your MSc/PhD, and what faculty will advise your research project

  • How your academic and other experiences make you a suitable candidate for the MSc/PhD in Bioinformatics graduate program

  • How the Bioinformatics graduate program will help you to achieve your career goals

  • Why you believe this particular graduate program at the University of Guelph is ideal.

Please note that once an application is submitted for a specific program, it cannot be switched to one of the other programs. The applicant will have to re-apply to the other program and therefore pay the application fee again. Thus, it is important to ensure that the correct program was selected.

M.Binf. applicants do not need to identify a BINF*6999 project advisor prior to applying.

M.Sc. and Ph.D. applicants must indicate an agreed advisor at the time of application. Prospective students interested in the M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs should commence discussions with faculty well in advance of applying. Offers of admission will only be issued in cases where a member of Bioinformatics Graduate Faculty has agreed to be the advisor.

If your first language is not English, you will be required to submit the results of a standardized language test. For applicants who speak English as a second or additional language, you may request consideration for a waiver of the English language requirement once you have submitted your application if you have successfully completed a Bachelor's or Master's university degree in English in Canada by emailing cbsgrad@uoguelph.ca. In all other situations, an English proficiency test score is required with your application.

Apply through the Department of Graduate Studies at the University of Guelph.
