We chatted with a second-year chemistry student and dean's scholarship recipient about her U of G experiences.

What is your program and major?

My name is Victoria Pham-Tran, I am a second-year Bachelor of Science student majoring in Chemistry.

Why did you choose the University of Guelph?

I chose the University of Guelph because I knew about its esteemed reputation as a science-based school. The programs the university carries were exactly what I was looking for as a senior in high school. Not to mention the campus is absolutely beautiful!

What's your favourite thing about being a student here?

My favourite thing about the University of Guelph has to be the comfortable atmosphere. I love how they make sure your transition into university is as effortlessly as possible, providing you with unlimited amounts of resources and guidance. The faculty at Guelph are also extremely helpful to their students, and the food at the university is the best there is.

What's something that surprised you about your experience here?

One thing I didn’t expect going into University was changing my major! I initially went into Guelph as a Biological Sciences major. After some realizations and decision-making, I found that I preferred chemistry. Luckily enough, the University of Guelph allows people to easily switch majors under a certain degree program.

What's your favourite course so far?

I would say my favourite first year courses have been Chem 1040 and Math 1210. For Chem 1040 I was able to expand knowledge on concepts I learned in grade 12 chemistry, which interested me greatly. In Math 1210 I discovered that math is actually pretty cool! I learned so many new ways on how to work with numbers with respect to derivatives and integration and they were all fascinating and quite engaging.
