The ONWiE Summit 2023 was a jam-packed two-day event thanks to the captivating researchers and speakers. Last week on the 14th and 15th of November, attendees enjoyed a full day of sessions, and Tuesday’s events wrapping up with a gala.

Val Davidson was integral in the success of the Summit, as her contribution to the Women in Engineering Chair was used in part to sponsor eight graduate students, three faculty, and three staff to participate this year. Under Val’s leadership, the Ontario Network of Women in Engineering was launched in 2005, connecting all 16 engineering faculties and schools across Ontario.

The University of Guelph’s presence at the “Diversity Through Inclusion” Summit this year did not go unnoticed as we brought 22 representatives, including students, staff, faculty, and alumni. A select few were fortunate to be participating as speakers. From Dr. Graham Taylor, Professor, School of Engineering, University of Guelph and Canada CIFAR AI Chair, Vector Institute presenting at Ethical AI: the essential role of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in AI, to Qurat-ul-ain Dar, MASc, Dr. Andrea Bradford, Associate Professor, and Dr. Julie Vale, Associate Professor, Associate Director Undergraduate Studies participating in Engineering Student Ideology and Engagement with Social Justice. Sarah Hynes, University of Guelph Engineering undergraduate, was also a panelist on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion on Engineering Student Societies.

Special thanks to Jean Hein and Jana Levinson for the organization of this event for the UofG attendees.
