Statement from AVP - Transgender Day of Remembrance
Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance, a day we honour all trans, two-spirit, and non-binary folks who have lost their lives to hatred, discrimination and violence. Canadians began marking this day, as a response to the brutal killing of Rita Hester, a Black, Trans woman in 1998.
As we take a moment to pay respect to transgender and gender-diverse folks we have lost and survivors of violence today, we must remember that transphobia, hatred and discrimination have no place at the U of G. We have a collective responsibility to ensure that each and every member of our community feels safe, welcome, and respected, and that every person’s fundamental right to exist freely and safely is upheld.
