Post-Doctoral Scholar Wins Best Presentation at DMIP International Conference

Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Shanoon, a post-doctoral scholar in the AI Lab in the School of Computer Science, has been awarded Best Presentation at the 2025 8th International Conference on Digital Medicine and Image Processing (DMIP) in Tokyo, Japan. Held at the University of Tokyo from November 27–30, DMIP is a leading international conference where researchers and professionals from around the world share new work in digital medicine, image processing and related fields.

University of Guelph Awarded Sloan Foundation Grant to Explore Life’s Chemical Origins

Could life begin differently? A new University of Guelph project aims to find out with funding from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation in collaboration with researchers at the University of Pennsylvania and Elm Research Laboratories. 

Dr. Derek O’Flaherty, Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry, will lead the Guelph arm of the three-year, $800,000 collaboration, which aims to investigate how life might emerge from genetic materials other than ribonucleic acid (RNA), expanding our understanding of what is possible for life in the universe.

CCMPS Invites Applications for CERC Candidate

The University of Guelph invites applications for nomination to the prestigious Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) in Green Artificial Intelligence (AI), which focuses on either developing energy-efficient, sustainable AI models or infrastructures, or applying AI methods to address environmental, agricultural, and societal challenges.

Celebrating a New Chapter: CCMPS Launch 

Faculty, staff, students and friends of the University of Guelph gathered in Waasamowin to celebrate the official launch of the College of Computational, Mathematical, and Physical Sciences on October 16, 2025. The event marked a significant milestone for the university — a moment to recognize the college’s deep disciplinary roots and to look ahead to new opportunities for collaboration, innovation, and impact.
