Education and Employment Background

Dr. Lori Jones received her PhD from the University of Guelph in 1996, following which she held a position as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Guelph. Between 1996 to 2003, she held Sessional Lecturer positions in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Guelph, as well as the University of Waterloo. She also held the position of BSc Liaison Coordinator and was the B.Sc.(Tech.) Program Counsellor between 1999 to 2013. In 2003, Jones joined the Department of Chemistry permanently, where she is now an Associate Professor.


Research Themes

At the University of Guelph, Jones focuses on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. She has conducted several projects that explore ways to utilized technology to support large enrollment courses while enhancing the learning environment for students. Examples of recent projects include:

  1. Competency-based Education. Jones led a team in creating and evaluating introductory chemistry modules to support individualized student learning.
  2. New methods for student feedback. Jones developed a method for scanning hand-graded student work to distribute digital copies to their owners through the course management system. This method provided a more streamlined and secured means of returning feedback to students in a timely manner.
  3. Instructional technologies. Jones has integrated online quizzing, online homework, and virtual lab simulations within courses to enhance learning opportunities.
