University of Guelph Welcomes Inaugural Civil Engineering Class
This September marks an exciting milestone for the University of Guelph's College of Engineering as it welcomes the first-ever cohort of students into its new Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering program. Interest has exceeded expectations, with a strong inaugural class set to begin this fall.
Developed in response to the growing need for resilient, sustainable infrastructure, the program equips students with the knowledge and practical experience to design the roads, bridges, buildings and water systems that communities rely on every day. Through hands-on design projects, co-op opportunities and an interdisciplinary curriculum, students will graduate ready to solve complex engineering challenges in Canada and around the world.
"We are so excited to launch our innovative Civil Engineering program, building on the strong foundations of our Water Resources Engineering and Environmental Engineering programs," says Dr. Jana Levison, engineering professor at the College of Engineering and Doody Family Chair for Women in Engineering. "Enhancing traditional Civil Engineering courses, Guelph Civil students will explore topics like green materials, smart infrastructure, and humanitarian engineering. This forward-thinking program will prepare graduates to support society in the face of Grand Challenges like climate change and population growth."
Students will study core areas including structural engineering, transportation, geotechnical systems and water infrastructure while also developing expertise in sustainable design, systems thinking and collaboration. The program's modern curriculum prepares graduates to lead projects that strengthen communities and improve quality of life.
The enthusiastic response from prospective students reflects the growing demand for engineers who can develop innovative solutions for a rapidly changing world. As the inaugural class begins this fall, these students will help establish a new chapter in engineering education at the University of Guelph.
