Turfgrass Director Says Helping Plants See the Light Will Fuel Pasture Growth
By understanding why grass does what it does, pasture managers gain an edge in producing high-quality forage, according to Ontario Farmer.
The publication outlines what Dr. Eric Lyons, director of U of G's Guelph Turfgrass Institute and Alliance-funded researcher, told audiences about the role of sunlight on a recent webinar presented by the Ontario Forage Council.
The key is timely grazing. “With grazing, we can control the plant’s ability to intercept light,” said Lyons. “If you have the ability to manage your (pasture) canopies between 40 cm and 10 cm, (about 16 inches down to five inches), that’s ideal.”
